SEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming

Swim England are the national governing body for aquatic sports in England. The Swim England Qualifications (SEQ) Level 2 Teaching Swimming qualification is a practical qualification for individuals wanting to progress from their SEQ Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) qualification, or SEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming to Babies and Toddlers qualification.

This qualification has been endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) as meeting the requirements of the professional standard for the role of a Swimming Teacher and provides 10 CIMSPA CPD points.

The SEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming qualification will enable you to effectively plan, prepare, deliver and evaluate swimming lessons independently. It also gives you the skills and confidence to provide quality, inclusive and fun swimming lessons.

Course Prerequisites

Every learner attending a SEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming course must be 16 years old or above at the start of the course and hold one of the following qualifications:

  • SEQ Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching)
  • ASA Level 1 Award in Teaching Aquatics
  • An equivalent ASA qualification

Course Content

The course is delivered through a mixture of classroom activities and practical poolside learning. You will participate in at least six 30-minute swimming lessons to gain hands on practical experience. During the course, you will learn about: 

  • The responsibilities and role of a swimming teacher
  • How the scientific principles of swimming impact on development
  • How to develop core aquatic skills and the four strokes
  • How to identify and correct common swimming faults
  • How to use a variety of teaching techniques and equipment to suit different needs
  • How to plan and deliver inclusive lessons for different levels of ability, including adaptations for swimmers with special educational needs and disabilities
  • Key teaching and management skills including class management and assessment, organisational skills, behaviour management, communication skills, and teaching methods
  • National curriculum swimming lessons and how they differ from learn to swim lessons

During the course you will allocated homework by your course tutor. This includes written assessment tasks that must ‘Meet the Standard’ before the end of the course. Assessment tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Theoretical Questions
  • Overview of a Series of Lessons
  • Lesson Plans
  • Self Evaluation
  • Professional Development Plan
