Emergency Paediatric First Aid

First Aid needs of children, varies, from those of adults. This course is for anyone over the age of 16 that comes into contact with or works with, infants and children. This one-day course covers the basic skills of CPR and First Aid related to children and infants. On completion, candidates obtain a Level 3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid, which is valid for 3 years. The Emergency Paediatric First Aid is regulated by Ofqual in England, Qualifications Wales in Wales and CCEA Regulation (Northern Ireland). It is endorsed by CIMSPA and the First Aid Awarding Organisation Forum.

Course Prerequisites

Candidates must be a minimum of 16-years-old at the time of taking the assessment and attend 100% of the course. No prior first aid knowledge is required. Employers should consider the following when selecting individuals to attend this training:

  • Reliability, disposition and communication skills
  • Aptitude and ability to absorb new knowledge and learn new skills
  • Ability to cope with stressful and physically demanding emergency procedures
  • Normal duties are such that they may be left to go immediately and rapidly to an emergency

Course Content

During the Emergency Paediatric First Aid course you will learn about:

  • Understanding the role of the paediatric first aider
  • How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
  • How to assess an emergency situation and act safely and effectively
  • How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who has a foreign body airway obstruction
  • How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is wounded and bleeding

The course comprises practical work, theoretical classroom work, as well as a practical assessment on CPR and first aid.

Course times are subject to change. These will be confirmed nearer to the course start date. This qualification is delivered and assessed in English. Bookings must be made through the account of the individuals attending the training.

Please be aware that attending the Emergency Paediatric First Aid course does not guarantee you a qualification; this will be dependant on the performance and the abilities of the candidate. In order to successfully pass the qualification, the candidate must attend all course hours, be able to demonstrate first aid knowledge and successfully pass the final practical assessment. Upon successful completion, the HSE recommends that first aiders undertake annual refresher training.
